In the enchanting island of Roatan, one organization stands tall, representing the significance of quality, affordable healthcare for every individual residing on this tropical paradise. Clinica Esperanza serves as a beacon of hope, illuminating the crucial role played in ensuring that all people of Roatan have access to the healthcare services they need, regardless of their financial circumstances.
Clinica Esperanza was founded in 2001 by Ms. Peggy, a remarkable individual with a deep concern for the health and well-being of the people of Roatan. Alongside a group of passionate individuals, including doctors, nurses, and community advocates, she established the clinic. Their collective commitment was to bridge the gap in healthcare accessibility and address the pressing needs of the underserved population.
In its early days, Clinica Esperanza faced numerous challenges, including limited resources, lack of funding, and logistical hurdles. However, Ms. Peggy's determination and indomitable spirit propelled the clinic forward. With her leadership and the dedication of volunteers, they turned obstacles into opportunities, setting the stage for the growth and impact of Clinica Esperanza.
Clinica Esperanza emerged as a lifeline for the uninsured population of Roatan. Recognizing the barriers faced by those without health insurance, the clinic adopted an inclusive approach, ensuring that no one would be turned away due to financial constraints. This commitment to affordability has been a cornerstone of the clinic, enabling access to vital healthcare services for those who need it most.
As the clinic gained recognition for its exceptional work, support from the local community and international donors grew. This support allowed Clinica Esperanza, to expand its facilities, enhance its medical capabilities, and attract skilled healthcare professionals. Through continuous growth and innovation, the clinic extended its reach, touching the lives of an increasing number of individuals in need.
Beyond medical treatment, Clinica Esperanza goes above and beyond to impact the community. The clinic actively collaborates with local organizations, forging partnerships that aim to improve healthcare infrastructure and provide holistic support. Together, they address not only immediate healthcare needs but also work towards long-term solutions for the overall well-being of the people of Roatan.

Leaving Isla Mujeres, Asylum sailed down the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula keeping a sharp eye out for any wandering whale sharks. None were to be seen, but… quite a fine sail none the less. Dropping the hook on the western side of Cozumel, protected from any prevailing winds, I and the crew settled in for the evening to rest and recover. The next few days were going to be dedicated to diving and an education on the local coral reef.
The reef system in this area is part of something larger, much larger. The Mesoamerican Reef lies within the Caribbean Sea and touches the coasts of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala and Honduras. It contains the largest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere, stretching nearly 700 miles from the northern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula down through the Honduran Bay Islands.
For those seeking unbelievable locations and beautiful experiences, this part and many others in Central America sure will check some items off the bucket list. Unfortunately, the damand that tourism brings is also having a devastating impact on ecosystems right below the waters surface. Coastal development, unregulated tourism, pollution, and overfishing is threatening the Mesoamerican Reef to the point of exhaustion and death.
The purpose of Cozumel Coral Reef Restoration Program, is to establish an area in Cozumel outside of the marine park where coral will be grown in a controlled environment and under care with the help of volunteers. To restore the most affected areas of Cozumel coral reefs due to the storms, over development and divers overload. Also, it will be an area to promote studies for research and the conservation of coral reefs, as well as to learn of reproduction, diseases, contamination, and propagation.
At the time of writing, CCRR has trained over 760 coral farmers, worked with over 300 volunteers, and restored over 3200 corals. Dr. German Mendez and his team have created a program with a focus on education, and hands on practical application. Offering courses and continued training to any who want the opportunity to have a direct impact on restoring a piece of the world’s fourth largest reef system.
After completing CCRRP’s Coral Reef Restoration Program, The Sea People Project would like to continue raising awareness. And do our part in protecting our reef systems, and the diverse ecosystem within.

Angela operated as Peace Manager for the Americorps Wings For Kids after school program at North Charleston Elementary School. The program operates in low-income, Title I schools across southeast USA teaching them skills to exceed in school and social life. The curriculum focuses on social and emotional skills to instill confidence and self-control in each child, thus preventing behavioral challenges.
This is not a typical focus in educational programs, but the skills that are being developed are extremely important for personal success. During Angela's time at the organization, she found that everyone young and old can benefit from these skills. She saw first hand remarkable results from often only a few months in the daily program. The most troublesome children turning into excellent leaders and helpers, and an unmotivated child now thrilled to read about science. Angela will tell you to this day that the program changed her life. Not only was she challenged by the responsibility of 165 children and their behavioral plans and management, but also in coaching the adult leaders and communicating with faculty and parents. She learned self-discipline and persistence alongside the children around her. After that incredible year-long experience, Angela's passion for children and personal development continues to soar!
"I got the chance to meet so many wonderful kids with unique personalities. We also had a ton of fun dancing, being silly and playing games! I learned to embrace my inner child-like spirit and continue to live my life like that."
